Blue Sky Bio
When energy-tech entrepreneur Nick Bartlett set up Blue Sky Bio to help create a zero-carbon world, he had no idea the University of Chester would help him grow his business so quickly.
Attracted to Thornton Science Park by the £multi-million Energy Centre, the move has seen Blue Sky Bio experience rapid growth, thanks to the range of services and support provided by the University of Chester.
This included helping him identify and apply for funding, advising him on developing technology and introducing him to research and commercial opportunities at Thornton Science Park.
From his new offices and fully-equipped laboratory, Nick also received support from the University of Chester’s commercial operations team, which opened a number of doors to business growth. Nick said:
“I can’t praise the support I received highly enough. It is unprecedented.”
The support helped Nick make connections with other Thornton Science Park tenants, leading to commercial collaborations, which allowed him to demonstrate Blue Sky Bio’s expertise by finding solutions to the low carbon challenges of his fellow tenants.
The close relationships fostered on Thornton Science Park, supported by the University of Chester, have also helped Nick attract two full-scale commercial projects, which have been major drivers in Blue Sky Bio’s growth.
In June 2016, Nick was the only member of the Blue Sky Bio team. As Technology Director, he now employs five people and has exciting plans in place for continued growth.
Nick’s success is making waves across the UK, with Blue Sky Bio recently nominated for The People’s Choice Award organised by Pitch at Palace and it has received official government support from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), since being based at Thornton Science Park.
The University of Chester is a proud delivery partner of the Cheshire and Warrington Business Growth Programme, which aims to deliver 12 hours of fully funded support to entrepreneurs and SMEs in the region.
